It is generally assumed that the distinctive feature of an absolute construction is the absence of coreference links between the nominal of the absolute construction and the constituents of the matrix clause. However, there are many exceptions to this generalising statement, both in Greek, since Homer, and in Early and Classical Latin. This article discusses such exceptions by attempting a taxonomy of them.
